Kong Liqing, also known by her art name Fu Shunzi. People who know her can hardly connect this ruddy-cheeked, brisk woman with the clinic doctor who could not even lift her arm to comb her hair only a few years ago.

Her story begins deep in the mountains.

I. Stepping Out of the Mountains

Kong Liqing was born into a farming family in a remote mountainous area. When she was little, her parents left home before dawn to work in the fields and returned exhausted after dark. She did her homework sitting on the ridge of farmland, with rolling mountains stretching out before her eyes. The thought “I must get out of these mountains” took root in her heart like a seed.

In 1988, she was admitted to a secondary technical school, becoming one of the few educated young people in her village. Four years after graduation, she was assigned to work in a factory that was on the decline. The workshop echoed with roaring machines, and her future seemed predictable and unchanging.

A turning point came through her family. Her parents-in-law were retired hospital doctors who ran a private clinic at home after retirement. Seeing that she was bright and eager to learn, they encouraged her to sign up for the adult college entrance examination and pursue a career in medicine. In 1999, Kong Liqing passed the exam and enrolled in a full-time program at a medical college. After graduation, she obtained her practicing physician qualification and returned home to help run the clinic. Over those years, she obtained the professional title of attending physician at the intermediate level, and the clinic thrived.

But the cost was her health.

II. A Body Broken Down by Exhaustion

Few outsiders can imagine the intensity of work at the clinic. Patients came one after another from morning till night, leaving her barely any time to rest. She rushed through a quick lunch and returned to her consultation desk in the afternoon. Long-term high pressure and extremely long working hours gradually drained her strength.

Insomnia struck first. She lay awake night after night, growing anxious and irritable. Then her lower limbs felt heavy and weak, as if filled with lead when she walked. The most severe problem was her shoulder: her shoulder joint had limited mobility. She could not hold a spatula while cooking, and lifting her hand to comb her hair became an unattainable luxury. At night, she had to tuck her aching arm behind her back just to fall asleep. She also needed to get up to urinate more and more frequently.

She underwent a comprehensive medical check-up. The results showed no organic lesions. “No detectable disease — that means it’s all from overwork,” she thought. She closed her clinic to rest at home. Yet even after a long break, her condition failed to improve, and those discomforts lingered like a shadow.

That was the darkest period of her life. “My life and work were in a complete mess,” she recalled later.

III. Meeting Her Mentor

By chance, she came across conditioning methods of traditional wellness. Deciding to give them a try, she began to learn and adjust her body.

Changes came slowly. Her insomnia eased, the mobility of her shoulder gradually recovered, and the heavy sensation in her legs faded away. For the first time, she realized that physical troubles could be addressed in such a way.

It was during this journey that she met Mr. Liu Xuanyan, founder of Xuanyan Dao and inheritor of traditional Chinese wellness culture.

Systematically studying traditional Chinese wellness culture under Mr. Liu Xuanyan marked a turning point for Kong Liqing. Like a dry sponge, she eagerly absorbed the wisdom of traditional wellness. Wherever her mentor went, she followed. She recorded and experienced wellness principles adapted to different regions and climates. The damp heat in southern China and dry cold in the north were turned into specific conditioning rules in her notebooks.

During this period, she studied while regulating her own health. Her physical discomforts faded day by day through consistent practice. What surprised her even more was the transformation beyond her body: her emotions, temperament and overall mental state were quietly changing. She used to get flustered and angry easily when troubles arose; now she learned to calm down and think before reacting.

“Once, when people said massage could relieve symptoms, I would not believe it at all and thought it was empty boasting,” she said with a smile. “Only after stepping into this field did I find how profound the wisdom here is.”

IV. Transformations of the Whole Family

Kong Liqing’s family members were the most direct beneficiaries as she studied traditional Chinese wellness culture.

Before she took her mentor as her teacher, her husband was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma and immediately received chemoradiotherapy. One year after treatment ended, Kong Liqing began to apply the wellness methods she learned from her mentor to help him recover after surgery. After years of consistent conditioning, her husband’s health got better and better.

Her daughter once suffered obvious health issues linked to emotional disturbance. Kong Liqing helped her child walk out of hardship entirely with the wisdom of oriental wellness.

She also cared for her elderly parents with wellness therapies in recent years. Over these years, the two seniors have rarely needed intravenous drips or injections in hospital, maintaining stable overall health.

The positive changes in her whole family strengthened her resolve to stay on this path.

V. Building a Wellness Courtyard

“Wellness philosophies have to be put into practice,” Kong Liqing said.

Her way of implementation is running a wellness courtyard deep in the mountains of Kunming, Yunnan, together with like-minded peers.

Inside the courtyard, she turns the wellness knowledge learned from her mentor over the years into tangible, daily experiences: diet, daily routines, emotional regulation and physical exercises, all following careful principles. Early in the morning, she guides guests to practice deep breathing in the yard. In the afternoon, they prepare seasonal nourishing meals together. In the evening, everyone sits around chatting over tea. Visitors come to the courtyard not merely to regulate their bodies, but to experience a different lifestyle.

Today, Kong Liqing sleeps soundly, eats well, lives comfortably and enjoys her life. “Strangely enough, even my personality has changed,” she says of herself.

From a mountain girl to an attending physician, and from burnout to an inheritor of traditional Chinese wellness culture, Kong Liqing has completed a thorough transformation of life. She often calls herself “a dream chaser for medical and wellness integration”. She pursues this dream steadily and wholeheartedly.

“It is never too late to find what you truly love.” As she speaks, sunlight falls warmly on the stone slabs in the courtyard outside the window.
